When setting up an audio-video editing suite, you’re going to need more than just an audio cable. Aside from the audio and video equipment, you also need the small things that tie everything together like an SMPTE hybrid fiber.
Suffice to say that the best editing suite is only as good as its equipment setup.
What an audio-video editing suite is for
It is used for a wide range of audio and video production, either pre, during, or post-production.
Audio production involves electronics, live sound, music theory, recording and recording techniques, sound design, sound editing, and sound mixing. It also includes audio delivery systems and distribution and analog and digital formats.
Video production, on the other hand, involves editing, post-production, sound, lighting, and motion graphics.
The tasks performed will vary, depending on a project.
You may need to set up and operate equipment, switching SMPTE fiber cables and re-configuring the system where changes have been made.
If you need to operate a sound and mixing board, you need to familiarize the different audio products to use, including an audio cable that plays a role in recording sound, music, and speech. In some cases, it is the channel that will synchronize sounds and speech from the video equipment.
What an audio-video editing suite needs
Several speakers and a big subwoofer are the common audio devices a basic editing suite will need. To ensure a convenient and fully customizable operation, you will need a receiver to operate the speakers and do a better job at calibrating the speaker system than you would from a computer’s volume controls.
Apart from choosing the best speakers and audio equipment, you also need to work out where to best place the speakers. Ideally, their distance from the editing position must be the same so that the phase and arrival time of sounds are similar for all channels.
Stereo delay units
Processing the picture for display often has a delay that ranges from 50-200 milliseconds, which is common for many modern 4K and HD monitors. This causes serious sync issues between the video that shows on screen and the audio that comes out of the speakers. This is where a stereo delay unit can remedy the audio/video sync problems.
With the speakers placed correctly and the audio cable attached, the next step is to calibrate the speakers. Most of the newer receivers allow for auto-calibration but manual calibration remains highly recommended.
In doing so, treat the pair of front speakers as your reference. Then, fine-tune the center channel and rear speakers at adjustments of +/- 10dB or so. Make sure pink noise alternates between the center channel and front channel speakers.
Think big when it comes to building an editing workstation. One of the best combinations includes an HP Z820 Workstation running Premiere CC, a 5.1 system that connects a SoundBlaster card to a surround receiver, speakers, and a 50-inch 4K playback monitor. If you use a camera, you’re going to need hybrid fiber camera cables to hook it up the computer system.
With the system in place, you can start editing. Expect to make ongoing adjustments until you get the best audio-video editing equipment setup.
